Searches of old parish registers (pre-1855), post 1855 certificate searches of the information held at New Register House in Edinburgh, census searches, library and archive research can all be catered for.

Other kinds of research such as area descriptions, photographs, monumental inscriptions etc. can also be carried out

Post-1855 Research at Thurso Register Office

£25 (GB) per hour for registrar visit

For post-1855 certificates requiring a visit to the local Registrar's office, certificates are transcribed from the register books rather than ‘official’ certificates being purchased.

This is especially useful when certificates available from Edinburgh are difficult to read, or a quick trawl through Caithness registers are needed to find family members in a short space of time. During such an hour numerous certificates may be transcribed or official certificates may be purchased at extra cost if required.

Palaeography services

Reading old handwriting varies in complexity with each document. Palaeography services start from £10 per page.

 With a Caithness visitors report I can give you information, modern and historical, on the area in which your family lived and give you information on places of interest and relevant to your visit.

Free up the time before your visit by allowing me to do the groundwork for you.

All you have to do is let me know the area your ancestors came from and any names that are relevant to you. For example, you may know your family lived in a certain area of Keiss, or a street in Wick.

My local knowledge can help you make the most of your time in Caithness.

A visitors report costs only £55 (including postage)

or for an extra £10 I can include an Ordnance Survey Landranger Map of the area you plan to visit with the areas of interested highlighted.

Cheques in £(GB) and Paypal payments are accepted. Foreign currency cheques can also be accepted but please add the equivalent of £6 (GB) to the total to cover costs
